Trails of the week / June 27 - July 3

Each week, ITRA suggests to discover trail-running races from around the world. This week, we are going to travel from France to Greece, but also Italia. The world is trail ! 

Trail Faverges Icebreaker / France

Born in nature, the Trail Faverges Icebreaker offers a unique prism of adventures, with a strong commitment to promote the natural environment, pledging to respect the environment. The event has two races of 48 and 29 km, selected in the challenge of National Trails (FFA), and also a short trail of 12 km to begin in trail-running. The start and finish of all races take place in the Simon Berger Park in Faverges, whose majestic trees prepare for breathtaking heights on the route of runners.

The three different races are in the natural park of the Bauges. The Maratrail of Sambuy (48 Km) and the Trail of the sources of the lake (29 Km) cross in part a national wildlife reserve. The panorama, the highlights, offer views of the surrounding mountains of Bornes, Aravis, Belledone, Beaufortain, but also the Lake Annecy and the Mont Blanc himself. Runners will discover the local environment with a rich flora, diverse and impressive wildlife. A few meters away of the trails, grow Lys Martagon and Lady's Slipper. A little further rest chamois and mouflon.

Olympus Mythical Trail / Greece

The earliest elements of ancient Greek religion were taken from the myths of the first inhabitants of Olympus, the Perraibians and the Pierians, who held that Olympus was the home of the twelve gods, the Muses and the Graces. The Olympus Mythical Trail is a unique and difficult trail-running race, for all runners who want to confronte themselves to the gods...

The 2016 edition will be held on Friday, July 1st, starting at 6:00pm from the Aiyannis park, just 4 km far from Litohoro town. The OMT is a challenging event for experienced trail runners. The ITRA-certified loop route is 95% on technical paths, with a total of 6410m ascent and almost 100 Km. The trail passes through unique scenery in pristine wilderness, offering a tremendous experience on the whole mountain.

Gran Trail Monti Simbruini / Italia

Simbruini mountains are the most important mountains in the central Italy; situated close to border between Lazio and Abruzzo, few km in est part of Roma. They have all particularities of Appennino: thousand acres of beech wood, peaks over 2000 meters, endless plateaus , deep valley crossed by clear and al lot of water.

To discover the Simbruini mountains, four different races are available for runners. The Simbruini Mountains Gran Trail, is the queen race of the manifestation. It is a difficult race of 84,4 km with a different in level of 6.050 meters; it will carry on to touch the highest mountain of Simbruini: Tarino mount (1961 m.), Cotento mount (2015 m) and Viglio Mount (2156 m), gifting landscape, emotions and unique scenarios.

The Medium Trail is a route of 29,2 km and 1270 meters of positive difference through the biggest tableland of Camposecco and Passo del Procoio to get the highest top of Roma Province, Autore Mount, where the landscapes are imposing in all direction. Then again you will run along the scenic ridge of Monna dell’Orso and on the green plateau of Campo dell’Osso to reach Monte Livata. Then, the fast trail will be the shortest race among the three different competition on the list, but not less interesting regarding the crossed location. The route will wind for 16,3 km in beech forests, karstic plateau and enchanted valley, a mix absolutely representative of the Appennini Mountains environments, at altitudes medium – high.

Dolomiti Sky Run / Italia

The Dolomiti Sky Run is the brainchild of a group of friends who wanted to organize and promote a trail-running event to show off the extraordinary natural beauty of the area where they live, in a combination designed to enable an athlete to discover his or her own limits, to foster a spirit of healthy competition, and to celebrate the activities of running and walking, characteristic of the local people. And so the Dolomiti Sky Run took shape : a 136km ultra trail along High Route 1 (UNESCO world heritage site), the long-distance path through the Dolomites from Braies to Belluno.

The Dolomiti Sky Run, surrounded by a unique and breathtaking scenography, will put the athletes to the test, they will have to face their own limits to conquer the race, on the beautiful places and amazing walking routes.

For this new edition, the path will take the runners from Braies (Bolzano) to Belluno. The National Park of Dolomiti Bellunesi has given the organization the permission to change the last and final stage from Duran to Belluno, which was modified last year due to weather conditions. So, this year, the athletes will run through the Van di Città, a natural reserve well known for the environmental quality and the originality of the landscape.
