Female-Focused Trail Running Clubs: Asaltamontes Female

Promoting female participation in sports is crucial, especially in trail running—a sport traditionally seen as male-dominated, with women currently representing just 29% of the ITRA community. To address this, we’re launching a series spotlighting female-focused trail running clubs from around the globe. These clubs share their inspiring stories about how they were founded, the motivations behind them, and the challenges they’ve faced and overcome.

Name: Asaltamontes Female

Location: Spain

Description: Asaltamontes Female is a non-profit organization created to give visibility to women in trail running. Our main goal is to increase female participation in races and promote mountain sports through free activities that combine training, motivation, and community.

1. What inspired you to create a women-specific trail running group?

I was inspired by the need to create a space where women could feel comfortable, supported, and represented in a sport that has historically been male-dominated. I wanted all women, regardless of their level or experience, to feel they could be part of this community.

2. What challenges do women face in trail running, and how can the community address them?

Some challenges include the lack of visibility, balancing family and social responsibilities, and the perception that trail running is a demanding and inaccessible sport. The community can help by promoting female role models, offering more opportunities for all skill levels, and creating inclusive spaces.

3. What advice would you give to women hesitant to try trail running?

Take the first step without fear! Trail running is not just a sport; it’s an experience that connects you with nature, yourself, and a wonderful community. Starting slowly, surrounding yourself with supportive people, and most importantly, enjoying the process is key.

4. How does your group create a supportive and inclusive environment for women?

We organize free activities such as meetups, workshops, and races that focus not just on performance but also on fun, learning, and building bonds. We ensure every woman feels welcome, regardless of their level or experience.
