Azores Trail Run® - Triangle Adventure 2017

“Volcanoes Marathon” inicia-se no território mais jovem de Portugal, o Vulcão dos Capelinhos, autêntico cenário lunar onde é possível pisar terreno formado por cinzas, tufo e bombas vulcânicas com apenas 60 anos de idade, tendo como linha de partida o Porto do Comprido à cota zero, naquela que foi a principal e maior estação baleeira dos Açores entre 1940 e 1957. Sobe a península do Capelo onde atravessará 10 vulcões adormecidos, entrando na Levada, a maior obra de engenharia hidráulica da década de 60 nos Açores. Após percorrer 9 Km desta espetacular levada, atravessando pontes e tuneis, chegará à Caldeira do Faial, uma das maiores e mais espetaculares caldeiras vulcânicas que existem no planeta, percorrendo o seu perímetro. Daqui desce, por caminhos antigos, até à cidade da Horta, umas das mais belas baías do mundo. Considerado pela Comissão Europeia como um Destino Europeu de Excelência, o Parque Natural do Faial está repleto de paisagens arrebatadoras, aves nativas, plantas únicas e formações geológicas emblemáticas, tudo rodeado por um magnífico mar azul, puro e vivo. Criado em 2008, é missão do Parque Natural a conservação deste magnífico património natural e a preservação da herança cultural de uma longa história de convivência entre o Homem e a Natureza, assentes num desenvolvimento sustentável e duradouro.

The Volcanoes Marathon – starts in the youngest piece of land of Portugal, the Capelinhos volcano, were you have the sensation that you are on another planet. Here it´s possible to walk on a terrain formed by ashes, tuff and volcanic bombs with 58 years old. The start line is at the sea level in the “Comprido´s” port, the most important and biggest whaling station of the Azores between 1940 and 1957, the year that the volcano started his eruption. The trail rises up through the peninsula of Capelo and crosses 10 sleeping volcanoes entering in the “Levada”, considered the biggest work of hydraulic engineering of the 1960´s decade in Azores. After 9 Km passing through bridges and tunnels of this artificial and spectacular water channel, there´s the arrival to the Caldeira of Faial, one of the most spectacular volcanic caldera´s on the planet. After making it´s perimeter, it starts the descent through old roads to the city of Horta placed in one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
