La Veni Vici 2023

Ce 72 km, c’est la distance reine de la VENI VICI. La plus belle et variée. La remontée intégrale de l’aqueduc romain dans le sens de la 1ère édition (2021), avec quelques belles nouveautés au programme. Si tu étais là en 2022, prépare-toi à perdre tous tes repères, ça ne monte et ne descendra jamais aux mêmes endroits. Le départ sera donné à 8h30 le samedi matin dans l’allée centrale des majeusteux Jardins de la Fontaine à Nîmes. Oh hisse, ça grimpe d’emblée et le passage au pied de la Tour Magne te plongera d’emblée dans l’ambiance romaine. Tu sortiras de Nîmes par les collines nord, dont la limite sera franchie dans le très charmant parc municipal du Mas d’Escattes. Doucemanette, apprenti centurion, il te faudra apprendre à ménager ta monture. Le dénivelé et les relances incessantes sont des plus trompeurs et cassants ! Ce sera parti pour une longue remontée dans la garrigue gardoise et ses douces odeurs de thym et de romarin, en traversant des villages et des sites magiques le long des vestiges de l’aqueduc romain : les châteaux de Cabrières et de Lédenon, le site des étonnants tunnels souterrains de Sernhac creusés par les Romains (dans lesquels passait l’eau en direction de Nîmes), St-Bonnet-du-Gard… Et puis ce sera un festival de romanité à l’approche du Pont du Gard que tu fouleras 2000 ans après les soldats romains. Si tu verses une larmichette à ce moment-là, on ne t’en voudra point. Tu mettras le cap vers le village de Vers-Pont-du-Gard où tu longeras les carrières où avaient été extraites les pierres ayant servi à la construction de l’aqueduc romain (toujours en service). Tu traverseras ensuite les charmantes bourgades d’Argilliers et de Saint-Maximin, après quelques circonvolutions dans les collines qui sentiront bon le thym et le romarin. Ne restera plus qu’à surmonter le feu d’artifice final : l’ambiance verdoyante de la vallée d’Eure où l’aqueduc de Nîmes prenait sa source, puis la remontée vers les ruelles médiévale du remarquable Duché d’Uzès où l’arrivée t’attendra. A toi 2000 ans d’Histoire et le sourire triomphateur, tu l’auras bien mérité !

This 72 km race is the iconic distance of la VENI VICI. It’s the most beautiful and diverse one. You will follow the entire Roman aqueduct in the same direction as the first edition (2021), with some exciting new features added to the program. If you were there in 2022, get ready to lose all your landmarks because it won’t be going up and down in the same places. The race will start at 8:30 am on Saturday morning in the majestic Jardins de la Fontaine in Nîmes. You will immediately climb up, and passing by the Tour Magne will plunge you into the Roman atmosphere. You will leave Nîmes through the northern hills, and cross the charming Mas d’Escattes municipal park. As a fresh centurion, you will need to learn to manage your horse. The elevation gain and constant changes in terrain will be really tiring! You will embark on a long ascent through the Gardoise scrubland with its sweet smells of thyme and rosemary, passing through villages and magical sites along the remains of the Roman aqueduct: the castles of Cabrières and Lédenon, the site of the amazing underground tunnels of Sernhac, dug by the Romans (where water flowed toward Nîmes), and St-Bonnet-du-Gard. Then, as you approach the Pont du Gard, you will experience a festival of Roman history and culture, treading on the same ground as the Roman soldiers did 2,000 years ago. If you shed a tear at that moment, no one will blame you. You will head towards the village of Vers-Pont-du-Gard, where you will pass by the quarries that supplied the stones used to build the Roman aqueduct, which is still in use. Afterwards, you will cross the charming villages of Argilliers and Saint-Maximin, after some winding through hills fragrant with thyme and rosemary. You will then face the final fireworks: the verdant ambiance of the Eure valley where the aqueduct of Nîmes had its source, and then the ascent towards the medieval alleys of the remarkable Duchy of Uzès, where the finish line awaits you. You will have earned the 2000 years of history and the triumphant smile that will accompany you!
