About the Race

The Old Fisherman's Trail Challenge is +-25km race between Hout Bay and Fish Hoek. The route follows some sections that the fishermen used to take to cross the mountains that separate the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The race's start and finish points alternate each year between Fish Hoek and Hout Bay. There are slight changes to the route from the previous years. There are both advantages and disadvantages to the different route profiles. When you start from Hout Bay you begin with a relentless climb to the top of Blackburn Ravine - a climb of over 631metres, but then the rest of the route is a gradual descent into Fish Hoek with a two bumps to get over on the way. While the start from Fish Hoek also has a steep short climb early on with small rock scramble section. After which it is more runnable and with a more gradual climb - you climb for the majority of the race, but the view at the summit of Blackburn is awesome and the descent towards the finish is wild! The route does change slightly each year to vary things up a bit. This year the start is at the Fish Hoek Beach Sports Club and will finish in Hout Bay. The Old Fisherman's Trail Challenge is broken into 2 legs with a check point at Silvermine Dam within the Table Mountain National Park. The first leg this year will start at the Fish Hoek Beach Sports Club to Silvemrine Dam. The second leg from Silvemine dam continues up and over to finish in Hout Bay.
