Organizer information

The Organizer space is intended for organizers of trail-running races. In order to guarantee the best quality of events and to spread the values of trail running, ITRA provides race organizers with lots of services.

Provide a high-quality GPS track

Knowing precisely the difficulty of your trail race allows your future participants to evaluate their ability to take part in it in complete safety. Have your course evaluated by ITRA. The more precise your GPS track is, the more accurately the difficulty level of your trail will be correctly evaluated.

ITRA offers you to evaluate the level of difficulty of your race according to the distance to be covered and the positive and negative gradients present on the course.

The level of difficulty of the course is then translated into km-efforts according to an ITRA points scale. The more precise the GPS trace of your route, the more the number of km-efforts and the associated ITRA points are representative of the real efforts to be made by athletes.

How to make a good GPS trace?
The best way to measure a route is to walk it in its entirety, equipped with a quality GPS unit:

  • Use a particularly recent GPS device with an excellent quality antenna.
  • Prefer a GPS with a barometric altimeter for more accurate altitude measurement. Remember to adjust the altitude before you leave
  • Before you start your reading, delete the old tracks on your GPS
  • Set up your GPS device to record 1 point every 10 meters. Do not set it to take 1 point every X second: If you pause during the tour, the GPS device continues to accumulate many points in the same place, which makes the track heavier and less accurate.
  • At least 90% of your track must include altitude and time stamps.
Validate the Trace
During your recording, satellite signals may have been disrupted, especially in some rocky areas. This can result in outliers, several tens or even hundreds of meters away from the real position.
To solve this, load the trace on a mapping software like the one proposed by our partner Trace de trail. You will be able to detect and remove these points easily.

Have the distance and elevation differences assessed by ITRA
Send your trace in. GPX format (procedure to be specified according to process Itra and new site tree structure)
The more accurate your GPX file is, the better ITRA can evaluate your course and calculate its distance and elevation gain in the most accurate way:

  • calculation of the distance to be covered, considering both the flat distance and the altitude of the points (elevation)
  • improvement of the precision of the recorded altitude difference: the principle consists of smoothing the altitude curve by calculating a sliding average that does not consider elevation differences between the points as long as they are below a threshold of 3.

Once this evaluation is completed, a number of ITRA points are assigned to your race based on the effort required to complete it.

NB: Aid stations & a number of loops also have an impact on the number of ITRA points awarded!
