Azores Bravos Trail 2023

Deixando para trás o Clube de Golfe, os atletas da prova Longa entram nas densas Matas da Agualva e sobem até à zona da Terra Brava, que os levará a um dos monumentos naturais da Ilha Terceira, o Algar do Carvão. Preparados para descer e subir uma escadaria de betão ao longo da extensão total de 300 metros e pouco mais de 330 degraus, os atletas podem observar, olhos nos olhos as entranhas da Terra na Ilha Terceira, visitando o interior do vulcão e olhando de espanto para tudo o que o rodeia. Mas não se esqueça que está numa prova de corrida e que tem de continuar o seu percurso, não se deixando perder por entre as belezas que não viu ao descer. Segue-se o encantado e apaixonante trilho dos Mistérios Negros, com a sua esplêndida paisagem e marcado pelos domos traquíticos de cor negra e carência de vegetação, resultanta da erupção vulcânica de 1761. Em breve o trilho fica para trás e a longa descida, cerca de 11 Km, até aos Biscoitos, com o entorno paisagístico da cultura do vinho, dará início a um novo capítulo … a travessia Norte-Sul da Ilha Terceira. A saída da prova de Trail dos 35Km seguirá a deslumbrante zona costeira dos Biscoitos entrando posteriormente em trilhos de natureza cerrada e de caminhos agrícolas, ascendendo cerca de 12 Km até ao miradouro da Rocha do Chambre, local ex-libris do Azores Bravos Trail, que merecidamente ganhou lugar no nosso coração. A evolução dos atletas seguirá, maioritariamente, por trilhos e campos de pastagem, subindo por uma das encostas da Caldeira Guilherme Moniz, que alberga diverso gado bravo por entre as suas pastagens. Chegados ao topo da Serra do Morião, a vista deslumbrante sobre Angra do Heroísmo, com os seus Monte Brasil e Oceano Atlântico a envolvê-la, serão o último fôlego de saudade do Azores Bravos Trail e a preparação para a descida até à cidade Património Mundial da UNESCO e, por duas vezes, capital de Portugal. Os atletas seguem convergindo para o mesmo ponto de união de todas as provas na Serra do Morião, descendo posteriormente na Canada do Breado até às “portas” de Angra do Heroísmo, a Nasce Água. Chegados ao Alto da Memória (ou Outeiro da Memória), o colorido do Jardim Duque da Terceira está aos pés dos atletas. Toda a descida até ao centro da cidade Património Mundial faz-se dentro do jardim, com variadas espécies exóticas. A meta está já ali! Atravessando as ruas históricas da mais bela cidade açoriana, a passagem pela Fortaleza São João Batista e o entrar no Parque Municipal do Relvão é o culminar de uma prova cheia de emoções, cheiros, imagens, proeza e coragem. É o terminar de uma prova em que desejamos voltar e em que as saudades já nos batem à porta.

Leaving the Golf Club behind, the Long Runners enter the dense woods of Agualva and climb up to the Terra Brava area, which will take them to one of Terceira Island's natural monuments, Algar do Carvão. Prepared to descend and climb a concrete staircase along a total length of 300 meters and just over 330 steps, athletes can see the bowels of the earth on Terceira Island eye to eye, visiting the inside of the volcano and gazing in amazement at everything that surrounds it. But don't forget that you're in a running race and that you have to keep going, not getting lost among the beauties you didn't see on the way down. Next up is the enchanting and passionate Mistérios Negros trail, with its splendid landscape and marked by the black trachytic domes and lack of vegetation that resulted from the volcanic eruption of 1761. Soon the trail will be behind us and the long descent, about 11 km, to Biscoitos, with the scenic surroundings of the wine culture, will begin a new chapter... the north-south crossing of Terceira Island. The start of the 35km trail race will follow the breathtaking Biscoitos coastline and then take in some wilderness trails and farm tracks, climbing for around 12km to the Rocha do Chambre viewpoint, the ex-libris of the Azores Bravos Trail, which has deservedly earned a place in our hearts. The athletes' progress will mostly follow trails and pasture fields, climbing up one of the slopes of Caldeira Guilherme Moniz, which is home to several wild cattle among its pastures. Arriving at the top of Serra do Morião, the breathtaking view over Angra do Heroísmo, with its Monte Brasil and Atlantic Ocean surrounding it, will be the last breath of nostalgia for the Azores Bravos Trail and the preparation for the descent to the UNESCO World Heritage city and, twice, the capital of Portugal. The runners will then converge on the same point where all the races meet, Serra do Morião, and then descend on Canada do Breado to the "gates" of Angra do Heroísmo, Nasce Água. Once you reach Alto da Memória (or Outeiro da Memória), the colorful Duque da Terceira Garden is at your feet. The entire descent to the center of the World Heritage city takes place within the garden, with its many exotic species. The finish line is just around the corner! Crossing the historic streets of the most beautiful city in the Azores, passing the São João Batista Fortress and entering the Relvão Municipal Park is the culmination of a race full of emotions, smells, images, prowess and courage. It's the end of a race that we long to return to and miss.
